What is protein deficiency in Pomeranian dogs?
Protein deficiency in Pomeranian dogs, also known as hypoalbuminemia, is characterized by reduced plasma protein, reduced colloid osmotic pressure, and generalized edema.
Causes of protein deficiency in Pomeranian dogs
Protein deficiency is mostly secondary to other diseases.
Insufficient protein intake or malabsorption such as esophageal stricture, chronic diarrhea, etc.
Excessive protein consumption such as massive blood loss, severe burns, thermal diseases, malignant tumors, cachexia, pleurisy, peritonitis, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, etc.
Protein synthesis disorders are seen in liver diseases, such as cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, etc.
Symptoms of protein deficiency in Pomeranian dogs
Sick Pomeranian dogs show emaciation, rough coat, weight loss, and cessation of growth. Loss of appetite, pale mucous membranes, and decreased blood pressure. Severe Pomeranian dogs develop generalized edema. Resistance is reduced and secondary infections are prone to occur.
Diagnosis of protein deficiency in Pomeranian dogs
The total protein content in the plasma of adult Pomeranian dogs is 5.3~7.5g, and the albumin is 3~4.8g , if the total plasma protein drops below 5g% and the albumin drops below 3g%, protein deficiency can be considered. Because it is often accompanied by anemia, hemoglobin and red blood cell reduction.
