How much water does a dog need every day? Water is the most important substance for a dog’s life activities. Water must be involved in the digestion, absorption, and transportation of various nutrients, the elimination of waste, the regulation of body temperature, and lactation of bitches.

Under normal circumstances, adult dogs need 80 to 120 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day; puppies need 140 to 170 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. The amount of water consumed varies depending on the season, feed type and management methods. In actual breeding, drinking water can be provided throughout the day for dogs to drink freely.

Water is an essential substance for dog metabolism. Only with the participation of water can the body's endocrine and cell structure be maintained in a normal state. In addition, the evaporation of water forms heat exchange with the outside world through the body surface and respiratory system, which can lower body temperature. If nutrients are not dissolved in water, they cannot be fully absorbed. Especially sick dogs cannot recover from lack of water.

Dogs can go without food for two days, but they cannot go without water for one day. A water shortage of 20% will be life-threatening. Under normal circumstances, adult dogs need about 100 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day, and puppies need 150 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. Long-term dehydration in dogs will lead to deep-set eyes, rough and inelastic skin, and even circulatory disorders due to thick blood. In severe cases, it may lead to death.

In addition, dog owners should increase the amount of water they drink during hot seasons, after exercise, or when feeding their dogs relatively dry feed. Drinking water should be provided and allowed to drink throughout the day.
