There are many causes of vomiting in dogs, such as gastroenteritis, body poisoning, and parasites in the stomach. Many times, the poop scooper is unable to determine the cause of vomiting, and does not know which medicine to give the dog or what to do. Describe the cause of the disease to the doctor, so today I will help the scavenger have a basic ability to identify the cause of dog vomiting in terms of nature, time and symptoms.

1. According to the nature of vomitus

Vomitus is semi-digested product, which may indicate a problem with the stomach itself.

Blood stains in vomitus may indicate ulcers or tumors in the stomach.

2. According to the time of vomiting

Vomiting only 3-4 hours after eating indicates a problem related to the small intestine rather than the stomach, because if it is stomach discomfort, vomiting often occurs shortly after eating.

Vomiting immediately after eating may indicate esophageal obstruction.

If the vomiting is obviously not related to eating, it may indicate that the vomiting is caused by non-gastrointestinal diseases, which are often caused by body poisoning, nerve damage, etc.

Vomiting occurring before diarrhea may indicate that the animal has ingested toxic substances or has a progressive, serious disease such as canine parvovirus or feline panleukopenia. Feline panleukopenia, commonly known as feline distemper and feline infectious enteritis, is an acute and highly contagious infectious disease in cats.

Vomiting occurring after diarrhea can indicate that the cause is often in the intestines, and less likely in the stomach.

3. Based on the symptoms combined with vomiting

Dogs vomiting, not eating but having the desire to drink, vomiting after drinking enough water, and oliguric and thick urine may indicate acute gastritis or leptospirosis

Dogs with strange food like eating foreign objects in plants and trees; vomiting immediately after eating can indicate intestinal parasitic disease

Sudden and repeated vomiting and abdominal pain in dogs, accompanied by sticky bloody stools, may indicate intussusception. A few dogs with mild cases of this disease can be repaired by hand through the belly, but most still require surgery.

Dogs with persistent diarrhea, vomiting after eating, howling uneasily or lying prone and moaning, looking back at the abdomen, muscle tremors, and dehydration are mostly indicators of volvulus or intestinal strangulation. Strangulation and torsion are caused by the dog jumping, rolling, running, etc. immediately after eating a large amount of food, causing the intestinal segment to shift, resulting in mesangial strangulation and requiring surgical treatment.

Dogs that frequently vomit or vomit blood, have diarrhea (or blood), groan with abdominal pain, and have worsening pain on abdominal palpation may indicate acute pancreatitis.

All in all, treatment methods are different for various causes of vomiting. However, before identifying and diagnosing, if vomiting has caused abnormalities such as dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, it is important to first carry out symptomatic therapy such as infusion. . Then, continue to search for causes of vomiting.
