What preparations do owners need to make before a dog gives birth?

1. Prenatal examination

Dogs can be taken to the hospital for X-ray testing when they are 30-40 days pregnant to check the number of fetuses to ensure normal fetal development.

2. Calculate the expected date of delivery

Based on the date of the last breeding of the female dog, it can be pushed back 58-62 days. About 5 days before giving birth, most dogs will automatically look for dark corners in the house to avoid external interference.

3. Prepare the farrowing box

Prepare a large nest for the female dog, preferably wooden, but paper can also be used;

The size is large enough for the female dog to lie down and accommodate the puppies;

There should be a certain height around to prevent puppies from climbing out, and reserve an exit for the female dog;

The inside of the birthing box must be smooth and free of water chestnuts to prevent scratches on the puppies;

4. Prepare medicines and supplies for delivery

Waste newspapers, several clean towels, scissors, cotton thread, absorbent cotton balls, wash basin, hot water, hair dryer.

5. Energy supplement before delivery

The female dog may be exhausted during the birth process. In order to replenish the energy needed at any time, nutritious and easily digestible food can be prepared and fed between births.

6. Physical hygiene

The day before delivery, comb and clean the dog, wipe the nipples with alcohol and shave the hair around the nipples and vulva.

7. Make a plan for difficult labor treatment

Dogs usually give birth at night, and owners should contact the nearby 24-hour hospitals in advance to prevent unexpected situations such as dystocia during the birth process.
