Symptoms of gastritis in dogs

1. The main symptoms of dogs are depression, vomiting and abdominal pain.
2. In the early stage, the vomited food is mainly food, and in the later stage, it is foamy mucus and gastric juice. Depending on the cause of the disease, the vomitus may be mixed with blood, bile and even mucosal fragments.
3. Sick dogs become particularly thirsty, but will vomit after drinking water.
4. The dog’s appetite is significantly reduced or refuses to eat, or appears uneasy due to abdominal pain.
5. When dogs vomit severely, they may develop symptoms of dehydration or electrolyte imbalance. When examining the oral cavity, you can often see yellow-white tongue coating and smell a foul odor.
6. The abdomen is sensitive and resists palpation, and likes to squat or lie on the cold ground.

Causes of dog gastritis

1. Because the dog eats too much food, or eats spoiled food, foreign objects, etc.
2. Secondary to certain infectious diseases such as canine distemper, canine infectious hepatitis, parvovirus enteritis, liver flukes, pancreatitis, nephritis and parasitic diseases.
3. Long-term irritation of the gastric mucosa, anemia, achlorhydria, malnutrition, etc.
4. Caused by taking strong irritating drugs.

Treatment methods for dog gastritis

1. The principle is: protect the dog’s gastric mucosa, inhibit vomiting, remove the cause, and prevent dehydration.
2. Stop feeding spoiled food and irritating drugs for more than 24 hours. A small amount of water or ice cubes can be given multiple times to maintain oral moisture, and then sugar and salt rice soup, or high-sugar, low-fat, low-protein, easy-to-digest liquid food can be given. After a few days, the patient can gradually resume a normal diet.
3. In the early stage of illness, when harmful substances still remain in the stomach, emetics can be used. Later, when harmful substances enter the intestines, laxatives should be used.
4. When the sick dog has severe vomiting and is in danger of dehydration, sedation should be given to stop vomiting.
