Not all vaccines are the same

Different vaccines provide different levels of protection against disease. Vaccines that protect against multiple diseases at the same time are called combined vaccines. The picture above shows the commonly used combined vaccines.

Canine distemper: Long course of disease and high mortality. Once purebred dogs become sick, the mortality rate is as high as 80%. It is one of the diseases that all dogs must be immunized against.

Parvovirus: A severe infectious disease that is more contagious than canine distemper, but has a lower mortality rate than canine distemper.

Coronavirus: It is extremely contagious and almost impossible to protect against through isolation. But it is not dangerous and the mortality rate is very low. Because the disease is so contagious, the vaccines are all inactivated vaccines, which although safe, offer poor protection. It's just that after getting sick, it's easier to cure.

Adenovirus: Divided into type 1 and type 2. Type 1 causes infectious hepatitis, and type 2 is an infectious respiratory disease, commonly known as kennel cough (kennel cough is just a symptom, and adenovirus type 2 is one of the causes. Not all kennel coughs are is caused by adenovirus type 2).

Leptospira: A zoonotic disease that is dangerous to both humans and dogs. Leptospira is very deadly to dogs and is also a very harmful disease to humans. There are many types of Leptospires. General vaccines can only protect against canine Leptospira and jaundice-hemorrhagic Leptospira.

Parinfluenza: Respiratory tract infection with low risk of death. It may also cause acute encephalomyelitis and hydrocephalus.

Generally, canine distemper and parvovirus are the two most harmful diseases to dogs. Immunization is also necessary, and other diseases can be selected according to local conditions.

In addition to combined vaccines, there are many single vaccines that only target certain diseases.

All brands of rabies vaccines are single vaccines. Therefore, after using the combined vaccine, don’t forget to take the rabies single vaccine. Theoretically, it is recommended to use a single vaccine of the same brand as Lian Miao.

Weijiaxi is a specialized parvovirus single vaccine.

Congbiwei Luobituo is a single vaccine specifically against Leptospira.

The past and present of big brands

Pfizer/Zoetis

Zoetis was originally the animal health department of Pfizer. In 2012, Pfizer split the animal health business into an independent company. A company with the Chinese name "Zoteng&rdq"uo;, its vaccine brand is Weijia. Traditionally, Zoetis's vaccine is still called "Pfizer Weijia X" on the market.

VANGUARD® PLUS 5-CVL (VANGUARD® PLUS 5-CVL) prevents 8 kinds of infectious diseases in dogs, commonly known as eight-link.

VANGUARD® PLUS 5 (VANGUARD® PLUS 5) prevents 5 kinds of infectious diseases, commonly known as Wulian.

VANGUARD® PLUS CPV (VANGUARD® PLUS CPV) canine parvovirus vaccine.

RABVAC® (RABVAC®3) rabies vaccine for dogs, cats and horses.

Intervet / Merck

Intervet of the Netherlands was once the largest vaccine brand in the country. In 2013, Intervet was acquired by Merck of the United States. It has now been renamed Merck Animal Health. Its vaccine brand is Chongbiwei. The two-combination and quadruple-combination vaccines we often talk about are from Merck.

Nobivac® Lepto (Nobivac® Lepto) bivalent inactivated vaccine for canine leptospirosis (canine type, jaundice-hemorrhagic type).

Nobivac® DHPPi (Nobivac® DHPPi) is a live vaccine against four infectious diseases. Commonly known as Quadruple.

Nobivac® Puppy DP (Nobivac® Puppy DP) canine distemper and parvovirus disease dual live vaccine. Commonly known as the puppy duo. This vaccine is generally only used when puppies are exposed to canine distemper or parvovirus at the age of 4 weeks.

Nobivac® Rabies (Nobivac® Rabies) inactivated rabies vaccine for dogs and cats.

Merial/Boehringer Ingelheim

Merial France was acquired by Boehringer Ingelheim in 2017 and became its animal health unit. Boehringer Ingelheim is the world's largest privately held pharmaceutical company, with 95% of its business being human medicines. It seems that the animal protection unit is not taken seriously within Boehringer Ingelheim. Domestic official websites don’t even have vaccine information.

In the past, Merial vaccines included Unicam and Rebecain, which are six-part vaccine and rabies vaccine. Because there is no vaccine-related information on the Chinese official website, I checked on the English official website and found only two brands, Rabisin® and Recombitek®. The English information is for the US market. There may be differences from domestic ones.

Recombitek® is a series of vaccines. According to the data, this series of vaccines can provide protection against 12 diseases.

Rabisin® Rabies Single Vaccine.
