　1. Earwax of healthy cats

A healthy cat’s ears should be fresh and clean. If they have not been cleaned for a long time, a small amount of earwax may appear. The epidermis of the ear canal is white and red or flesh-colored, and has no odor. ​​​​​​

2. Cat’s earwax when infected with ear mites

When cats are infected with ear mites, they may shake their heads and scratch their ears frequently. When owners notice this phenomenon, they should check the cat’s earwax. When a cat is infected with ear mites, the cat's earwax increases significantly, is mostly brown or black, and emits a peculiar smell. When observed with a magnifying glass, small, flesh-colored or white ear mites can be found squirming.

If this happens, we should use ear drops to clean the cat’s earwax, and then inject mite-killing liquid for treatment. We should observe and clean the cat’s ears regularly in the future, and keep the cat’s ears hygienic and dry at all times.

3. Cat earwax when the ears are infected

When checking the cat’s ears, if you find an increase in discharge from the cat’s ears and unusual white or yellow pus, the cat may have ear canal inflammation. Generally speaking, there are two types of ear canal inflammation: external ear canal inflammation and middle ear canal inflammation. Owners can clean the cat's ears and observe whether the external auditory canal is injured.

If the external auditory canal is injured and it is not serious, you can apply some anti-inflammatory ointment to the cat. If the symptoms are severe, it is recommended to seek medical attention immediately. If the external auditory canal is healthy, it is most likely that the middle ear canal is inflamed, and the cat should be taken to the doctor immediately.
