Dogs cannot eat cocoa butter substitutes because cocoa butter substitute foods contain a large amount of trans fatty acids, high sugar content and food additives. Dogs’ bodies cannot easily metabolize trans fatty acids; higher sugar content can cause blood sugar diseases such as hyperglycemia and diabetes in dogs; and different types of food additives can increase the burden on the liver and kidneys.
Tip:
Cocoa butter substitute is an artificial edible oil used to make chocolate and cocoa powder instead of cocoa butter. It is refined from vegetable oil. Dogs cannot eat chocolate because chocolate is processed from cocoa beans and contains a variety of methylxanthine derivatives, including caffeine and theobromine.
