The smooth-coated retriever is a multi-purpose dog. This dog can become a good family companion, hunting dog, and retriever. It is a very healthy and independent dog breed. The flat-coated retriever was registered by the AKC in 1915. By 1918, the popularity of this dog had been surpassed by the modern Labrador retriever. During World War II, registered numbers of the breed were reduced to the point of extinction, and it was not until the 1960s that large reserves of flat-coated retrievers were established.

【Physical Characteristics】

The ideal height for an adult male flat-coated retriever is 23 inches to 24.5 inches at the withers, and the height for an adult female flat-coated retriever is 22 inches to 23.5 inches at the withers. The Smooth-coated Retriever has a harmonious body and is able to work in a tough environment. This type of dog is lean and has no excess weight. Smooth-coated retrievers are well proportioned, with body length slightly greater than height at the shoulders, and females slightly longer.

【Head Features】

The smooth-coated retriever has a long head, an overall clean appearance, and a good sense of size and strength. At work it has enough power to recapture its prey, the head and muzzle being cast in one piece. The head is of medium width and relatively flat. The eyes are relatively spaced apart, medium in size, almond-shaped, dark brown or hazel in color, with eye rims the same color as the eyes. The ears are relatively small, well positioned, close to the head, and in a medium position. The flat-coated retriever has a large nose with open nostrils and a black nose. The lips of flat-coated retrievers are quite tight and the bite is better. The jaws are long and powerful, with a scissor-like bite.

【Torno Features】

The smooth-coated retriever has a strong, slightly arched neck, giving it the strength required of a retriever. The neck is of moderate length, free of dewlap, and the coat on the neck cannot be trimmed. Topline level, chest deep, extending well to the elbows, of moderate width, with slight protrusion of the forechest. The ribs are deep and have plenty of room. The ribs are relatively flat in the front and gradually lifted back. The lower abdomen has a deep curve, the chest bottom is narrow, and there is a moderate lift. The loin is strong and muscular. The tail is relatively straight, well positioned, not curled, and hangs naturally.

【Hair Characteristics】

The coat of the Smooth-coated Retriever is of medium length and covered with full, shiny hair. The ideal coat is lying straight and flat on the skin. A little wavy is okay, but definitely not curly. The density and length of the coat allows for protection in a variety of climatic conditions.For protection, there are thick feathers on the ears, front and rear limbs, thighs, and under the tail. The hair color is pure black or pure liver color. Yellow, cheese color and other non-liver colors are not good.

The smooth-coated retriever has a friendly temperament and is not easily irritable. It is a working dog with good hunting skills.
