Cats cannot expel ascites when taking diuretics. Because a cat’s urine is produced by the kidneys, is temporarily stored in the bladder, and is finally excreted through the ureters. However, ascites in cats is fluid in the abdominal cavity, and the abdominal cavity is a closed space. Therefore, except for artificial extraction, ascites will not be excreted from the body on its own, nor will it be excreted with urine. Ascites in cats can only be removed through a needle.

Treatment methods for cat ascites:

1. Treatment of ascites should eliminate the primary disease causing ascites, such as liver cirrhosis, heart failure, etc.

2. Cardiotonic agents digitalis, caffeine, diuretics, diuretics, etc. can be used, or intravenous injection of 10% calcium chloride can be used to promote the absorption and discharge of ascites.

3. If the ascites is caused by hypoalbuminemia, giving protein feed with high biological value will improve the symptoms immediately.

4. When breathing is difficult, abdominal puncture should be performed immediately to drain the abdominal cavity to reduce abdominal pressure. The puncture site can be selected at the lowest point of the abdominal wall, but the amount of fluid injected at one time should not be too large, otherwise it will cause collapse. Generally, it should not exceed 40 ml per kilogram of body weight.
