The Stabie Hound is a medium-sized single hound that originated in the Netherlands in the 17th century. This dog looks similar to a spaniel, with a slightly longer and well-proportioned body, a broad head and a muzzle that slopes toward the nose. Originating from the Friesland province in the north of the Netherlands, it may be a hybrid of the hounds brought by the Spanish conquistadors, the Dutch partridge hound and the Dutch water spaniel. The existence of this gunhound breed was discovered in 1800. Originally used for hunting small animals and birds, it was particularly an excellent mole hunting dog and was used as an all-around gun dog during the hunting season.
