Can dogs dissipate heat without sweating? Can dogs use fans to cool themselves?

Seeing that the dog is not sweating, can blowing an electric fan make it cooler? You know, the way the animal body dissipates heat is not just through sweating. The main heat dissipation part of animals is the skin (75-85%). Other heat dissipation pathways include respiratory organs (panting), digestive organs (puking) and urination.

Warm-blooded animals dissipate heat mainly through the following ways:

1. Radiation heat dissipation

The body heat dissipates body heat to the outside world in the form of heat rays (infrared rays), accounting for 70% of the total heat dissipation under normal and quiet conditions. That is to say, at normal temperature (around 25 degrees Celsius), when a dog is calm and quiet, it mainly relies on the skin to radiate body heat and does not need to sweat to dissipate heat.

2.Conduction heat dissipation

The body's heat is transferred directly to the cooler objects in contact with it. That is to say, dogs can dissipate heat by licking ice cubes and lying on the cool ground.

3. Convection heat dissipation

The way in which gas or liquid flows between the body and the body surface to exchange and dissipate heat. Blowing fans falls into this category of heat dissipation. The blowing fan increases the rate of heat removal by enhancing the flow of gas close to the skin, thereby achieving the purpose of keeping the dog cooler.

4. Evaporative heat dissipation

The body dissipates body heat by evaporating water from the body surface. In addition to the increase in sweat, the evaporation of the original water on the skin surface can also take away heat. For example, sprinkling water on a dog will not only have conductive heat dissipation effect, but also evaporative heat dissipation effect if the water evaporates.

To sum up, sweating is just one of the special ways dogs dissipate heat after exercise. In addition, the above four cooling methods can also cool down dogs, so blowing a fan can of course make dogs whose body skin does not sweat even cooler.
