Why do dogs lick their feet like crazy?

If your dog licks its toes frequently, it’s not because it’s hungry! It may be because its little paws are injured!

· Biting nails and excessive licking of feet

· Bleeding paws and cracked paw pads

· Walking lamely and uncoordinated

· Red feet (including hair)

· Foul smell in the feet (this is already very serious and may ulcerate and pus can be squeezed out)

How did you get injured?

· Allergies

Seasonal, food and contact allergies can cause swelling of the feet. At the same time, you can observe whether the dog is accompanied by coughing, red and swollen ears, and red spots on the skin on the belly to determine whether the dog is allergic.

· Infection

Bacteria (staphylococcus, Proteus, etc.) and fungi (dermatophytes, blastomycosis, etc.) can cause swelling of the dog's feet, accompanied by itching, redness and odor; in severe cases, pus may also be discharged .

· Foreign objects

The most common examples are broken glass or nails stuck in toes or pads, which will only cause foot swelling alone. If not removed in time, it can easily become infected with bacteria and worsen.

· Tumor

Squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, mast cell tumor, exocrine adenocarcinoma.

·Injury/Burn

Broken toenails (dog’s toenails contain blood lines) and wounds on the flesh pads; abrasions caused by playing on hard ground for too long; hot ground can also burn the dog’s flesh pads.

·Heart problems

Swelling of the feet may be accompanied by coughing.

·Joint problems

Slow movement, lameness, swelling, inflammation, and even deformation of the feet are likely to be arthritis problems; they usually occur in older dogs and large dogs.

· Overwork

Excessive exercise in dogs can also cause swelling of the feet.

· Hormones/Metabolism

Hypothyroidism, dry prostrate syndrome, hyperadrenocorticism.

· Broken toe

The feet are swollen, but it does not affect the legs, and walking is slow.

· Insect/bee bites

Bites from spiders, wasps, bees, etc. are usually limited to the surface of the claws.

Note: Allergies, infections, hormones, tumors, etc. can also cause interdigital cysts (interdigital inflammation) in dogs; in addition, dogs will also lick their feet when they are bored, which needs to be stopped in time, which can easily lead to compulsive licking in the later period.

Once you notice that your dog is acting abnormally and licking its feet repeatedly, parents should pay attention and check it in time. During the check, you must move gently and slowly to prevent the dog from hurting you because of pain.

What can we do?

· There is a foreign body in the foot

After taking it out, clean it and disinfect the wound with iodine/alcohol. If inflammation, infection and bleeding occur seriously, please rush to the hospital. Antibiotics may be needed. (For example, nails should be treated with tetanus to avoid rust invasion)

· Pad injuries

After cleaning the meat pad, apply lip balm/aloe vera/Vaseline (you can wear baby socks to prevent the dog from touching it), 1-2 times a day until it heals.

· Overexertion/floor burn

Soak your feet with baking soda and warm water (1-2 tablespoons of baking soda + 4L of water) to relieve redness, swelling and irritation; 3-4 times a day, 15-20 minutes each time, for 1-2 weeks.

· Insect bites

You can try wrapping an ice pack in a towel and placing it on the swollen area for five minutes, at least twice an hour (the dog may not like it, so it is best to have someone assist). The swelling usually subsides automatically in about 24 hours after being bitten by an insect. If the swelling does not subside within 24 hours, it is recommended to rush to the hospital to check whether there is any signs of poisoning.

· Bacterial infected cysts

It is necessary to use a large amount of antibiotics or directly surgically remove the diseased tissue, apply antibiotics, and after a few days (the specific time will be determined by the doctor after examination), then clean/soak with disinfectants

If there are ulcers, cysts, pus discharge, etc. on the dog's feet, parents are asked to take the dog to the hospital immediately for diagnosis. Severe cysts may require total removal of the affected finger web.

Note: After the operation, the doctor will wrap the dog's feet with a bandage. If you need to take it out, you can put it on the outside with baby socks or a plastic bag to keep the bandage clean and dry; parents need to change the bandage every 2-3 days. Pay attention and observe that if the dog licks again, it may be infected again (parents can wear an Elizabethan collar on the dog after surgery or during home care if necessary to prevent licking/contacting the wound) .

How to prevent damage to delicate little paws:

· Trim the excessively long hair and toenails on your dog’s feet regularly to avoid causing discomfort during walking.

· Give your dog a foot bath regularly, soaking it in warm water for 10-15 minutes.

· Be sure to dry your feet if they get wet (bathing, rainy days) to avoid the breeding of bacteria/skin diseases.

· When taking your dog out when the weather is hot, you can first try to feel the ground temperature with the back of your hand. If you feel a burning sensation, it is not recommended to take your dog out.

· Wipe Vaseline/aloe vera/lip balm, etc. on the soles of your dog’s feet before going out in winter to avoid dryness and cracking.

· After returning from going out every day, check whether there are any foreign objects on the dog’s feet and whether there is any damage to the meat pads.

· Regular monthly internal and external deworming can prevent dogs from developing a series of skin problems.
