Why do dogs’ paws crack?

The pads on the soles of a dog's feet are pink and tender when they are born. As they age, the pads will gradually become rough and even cracked. After the sole of the foot is cracked, the dog still keeps walking and licking, and the sole of the foot does not have a quiet environment to grow and heal, so the healing time of the sole of the foot is relatively longer than that of the skin on other parts of the body.

Function of meat pad:

Heat exchanger: The dog's paws have a magical vascular system, which is equivalent to a counter-flow heat exchanger, which can not only maintain body temperature but also keep the paws warm.

Anti-slip mat: The dog's meat pad is covered with sweat glands, which can prevent slipping by perspiring heavily when nervous.

Silencer: The soft meat pads reduce the sound of footsteps during hunting, making lurking possible.

Shock absorber: The meat pad is a collection of fat and a large amount of elastic fibers. When the dog takes off and lands, it relies on the thick meat pad to absorb shock.

Causes of cracked paws in dogs:

1. Cut or abrasion: If this happens, you need to use a bandage to help stop the bleeding, and go to the pet hospital to clean the wound in time to prevent infection.

2. Licking and biting the soles of one's own paws: Chemicals often sprayed in the garden or on the floor can cause discomfort to the dog's skin, causing the dog to lick and bite itself.

3. Hyperkeratosis: Keratin is a hard tissue on the skin. If it grows too fast, it can easily lead to dryness and cracking.

4. Bacterial infection: Malassezia or fungal infection on the palm can cause dehiscence.

5. Nutritional deficiency: Unbalanced diet and lack of certain minerals and vitamins can cause cracking of the soles of the feet.

How to care for foot pads:

1. If you can find a pair of comfortable shoes for your dog, that would be the best. The waterproof material, wear-resistant soles and double-safe fixed buckles can protect the dog's feet well, allowing the dogs to run unscrupulously in the cold winter.

2. According to statistics, 80% of foot problems are caused by improper cleaning. It cannot be completely cleaned with just water, and ordinary washing and care products are not easy to rinse. Pet Foot Cleansing Foam does not require washing and is particularly suitable for daily cleaning and care. It sterilizes and reduces inflammation while moisturizing feet to prevent dryness and cracking.

Precautions for foot pad care:

Control the indoor temperature and humidity to avoid long-term cold and dry air from damaging the dog's skin.

When walking your dog after snow in winter, avoid letting your dog walk on roads, sidewalks and other places where there is a lot of snow melting agent, and do not let them lick things on the road to prevent your dog from accidentally eating snow melting agent and being poisoned

Trim the hair on the soles of your feet regularly. Avoid moisture and bacteria, which can cause inflammation between your dog's toes.
