Causes of dystocia in dogs:

1. Labor dystocia. Due to the weak body of the female dog, weak contractions and exertion, premature contractions and water rupture, it is caused by the disease of the uterus itself.

2. Birth canal dystocia. Uterine torsion, cervical stenosis, cervical deformity, vaginal and vulva stenosis, birth canal tumors, pelvic stenosis and deformation.

3. Fetal dystocia. It is caused by factors such as excessively large and excessive fetuses in the uterus, twin dystocia (twin fetuses squeeze into the birth canal at the same time, fetal malformation), abnormal fetal position, abnormal fetal posture or direction, etc.

Symptoms of dystocia in dogs:

1. There is a past history of dystocia or reproductive tract obstruction, and rectal cooling (down to 37°C) continues for 24 hours without giving birth;

2. The strong contraction of the abdominal wall lasted for 30-60 minutes, and the newborn fetus was not delivered;

3. No puppies were expelled within 1-2 hours of active delivery;

4. During active delivery, the rest period exceeds 4 to 6 hours;

5. The animal is in obvious pain (moaning, licking and biting the vulva), and there is dark, pus-like or blood-like secretion discharged from the vagina;

6. The pregnancy period is extended (more than 70 days).

Treatment of dystocia in dogs:

1. Since it is difficult to correct the fetal position in the uterus of a female dog, midwifery measures should be implemented quickly after the cause of the disease is clarified. For female dogs with labor-related dystocia, medication can be used to induce labor combined with forceps traction to assist in delivery. For dystocia caused by other factors, caesarean section surgery should be performed immediately.

2. When there is no abnormality in the soft birth canal (the cervix is fully opened), if it is considered that labor dystocia is due, oxytocin can be injected intramuscularly at 1 unit/kg of body weight at intervals of 20 minutes. 1 time, usually 2-3 injections. In order to improve the contractility of the uterus, 10% to 30 ml of 10% calcium gluconate can be infused intravenously.

3. For difficult labor caused by birth canal and fetal abnormalities. You should be sent to the hospital promptly for caesarean section.
