Methods to determine the age of a budgerigar:

1. Look at the pattern on the top of the head

The pattern on the top of the head is dark and obvious, indicating that the age is within 2 months; the color of the pattern on the top of the head It gradually fades and quills appear, usually around 3-5 months, when it is in the moulting stage; the tiger stripes on the front of the head completely disappear, which means it is more than 6 months old, and it is an adult tiger skin.

2. Identify by looking at the bird’s beak

If the bird’s beak is black, it means it is still young and in the fledgling stage; as it ages, the bird’s beak will continue to turn yellow.

3. Identify by looking at the skin of the feet

The older the tiger skin, the more obvious and rough the fish scales on the skin of the feet.

4. Distinguish by looking at life patterns

Parrots in the young stage are lively and active, have poor flying ability, frequent defecation and high metabolism; adult budgies are skilled in flying skills and smart and mature. During the non-breeding period, their diet and defecation volume are much less than those of young birds; old budgerigars, usually more than 6-8 years old, often do not like to move and like to crawl and perch on bars. If they don’t fly, their diet will be greatly reduced, their feathers will be messy, their bodies will be weak, and they will be susceptible to diseases.

5. Distinguish the iris by looking at the eyes

When the budgerigar is a sub-adult bird (a bird that is not yet sexually mature, about one year old), all its eyes are Black. When the irises of its eyes gradually fade to a very light gray or brown, it means that it has matured (sexually mature) and is an adult bird. So completely black eyes are from 4 months of age; dark gray irises are from 4 to 8 months of age; eyes with brown irises are from 8 months and above. But if the budgerigar is a red-eyed species, this method is not suitable.
