Methods for treating metritis in dogs

1. First, intramuscularly inject diethylstilbestrol 0.1 mg/kg body weight to open the dog’s uterine mouth to facilitate the discharge of secretions. Another injection of uterine contraction medicine on the second day can fully discharge the inflammatory secretions in the uterus.
2. Systemic application of antibiotics, penicillin 50,000 units/kg body weight, streptomycin 40,000 units/kg body weight, mixed intramuscular injection, 2 times/day.
3. Systemic maintenance therapy, including intravenous infusion of glucose saline, 5% sodium bicarbonate, vitamin C, etc.
4. For cases in which treatment is ineffective, ovariohysterectomy should be considered.

Causes of metritis in dogs

1. Usually during the estrus, breeding, delivery, difficult labor and postpartum period, pathogenic microorganisms infect the uterus, such as Streptococcus, Grape cocci, E. coli, etc.
2. Vaginitis, miscarriage, stillbirth, brucellosis, salmonellosis, etc. can all cause endometritis.

Symptoms of metritis in dogs

1. Acute endometritis is more common within a few days after delivery. Dogs have elevated body temperature, are depressed, are easily thirsty, and do not eat. Dogs sometimes vomit, and some may discharge a small amount of turbid and flocculent secretions from the vagina.
2. Chronic endometritis can be caused by acute inflammation or stimulated by chronic inflammation, with little change in mental appetite. However, most female dogs are emaciated, and some have white serous discharge from their vaginas. Female dogs are generally not in estrus, but some dogs are in estrus, but they cannot get pregnant. Palpation of the uterus reveals that the uterine horns are hard and thick. When a large amount of liquid accumulates, there may be a feeling of fluctuation. Appearance shows an increase in abdominal circumference.
