What should I do if my cat has a fracture? Cats have pads on their feet, so the chance of injury if the cat falls from a height is very small, but accidents will always happen, so what should you do if your cat has a fracture?

1. Symptoms of fractures in cats

Sick cats have swelling of soft tissue in the affected area, pain and discomfort, howling or moaning, muscle tremors, sweating, and dysfunction. Local bone deformation, abnormal movement, tenderness to touch, and bone fractures can be felt. There is also a friction sound, but there is no bone friction sound when the fracture is incomplete or the broken ends of the bone are separated far apart. If it occurs in the limbs, the activity is abnormal, the sick cat is lame, has difficulty standing, and the open fracture has local trauma and bleeding. In some cases, bone ballast or the broken end of the bone can be seen protruding from the wound; some can cause blood loss anemia or even death from shock. .

2. Treatment of cat fractures

Step 1. Approach the cat carefully. If your cat is anxious or fearful, it can be controlled if necessary.

Step 2. Examine the cat’s broken leg and determine whether the fracture is open (there is a wound near the fracture, or a bone pierces the skin) or closed (the skin is not broken)

Step 3. If it is a closed fracture, proceed to step 4. If it is an open fracture: Flush the wound thoroughly with clean water. Never use any other disinfectant.

Step 4. Do not try to splint the fracture. Use a large folded towel to support the cat's unsplinted limb from underneath, and take the cat to the veterinarian immediately.

3. Emergency treatment after fracture

Drug therapy: Dieda pills can be taken orally. For open fractures, antibiotics or sulfa drugs should be used continuously to control the wound before and after restoration and fixation to prevent secondary infection.
