Fever is one of the main symptoms of a cold in cats, but since cats’ body temperatures are slightly higher than those of humans, sometimes it is difficult for the cat to notice even if they have a fever. If you want to confirm whether your cat has a fever, you can use a thermometer to check its temperature. The body temperature of a healthy cat is usually within the range of 38.5℃-39.5℃. If the cat's body temperature is higher than this temperature, it is a sign of fever. ​​​​​​

Measure body temperature

It is basically impossible to tell whether a cat has a fever by just touching it. You need to take a temperature measurement to confirm. Prepare a thermometer, lubricant and paper towels, and you can start taking your cat's temperature. Put the lubricated thermometer into the cat's anus, try to be as gentle as possible to avoid hurting the cat, wait for a while and then take it out to check the temperature.

If you don’t dare to measure the cat’s rectal temperature, skin temperature is also acceptable. You can choose to clamp the thermometer on the cat's hind legs and fix it to prevent it from moving. You can measure the temperature in a few minutes. However, the skin temperature will be slightly lower than the rectal temperature. It is recommended to add about 0.5℃ to this temperature to be more accurate.

Help cool down

If the cat has a severe fever, it is recommended that the cat be sent to the doctor for diagnosis and treatment in time. If you have a low fever, you can take some measures to help your cat cool down. Place the cat in a quiet and cool place, wipe its body with a wet wipe, and let its body temperature slowly drop.

Supplement moisture and nutrition

It is important to replenish water and nutrients for sick cats. A fever may cause your cat to become dehydrated, so you should have fresh water ready for your cat to drink at any time. If the cat really doesn’t want to drink, you can use a syringe to assist in feeding water. Food should be prepared that is easy to digest and has high nutritional content to supplement the nutrients and energy needed by the cat and promote recovery.
