Clinical symptoms of scrotal hernia in cats

Scrotal hernia in cats is mainly caused by the protrusion of abdominal organs through the inguinal ring and descent into the scrotal cavity, also known as inguinal scrotal hernia. Dogs are more likely to get the disease than cats, and young male cats are more likely to get it.

Cat scrotal hernia mostly occurs on one side, and rarely occurs on both sides at the same time. Cat scrotal hernia is mostly reversible. Clinically, it can be seen that the scrotum on the affected side is significantly enlarged, the skin is tense, soft and elastic to touch, and there is no Heat is painless. Reducible scrotal hernia can be reduced, but embedded scrotal hernia occurs less frequently. Once it occurs, it will show the same clinical symptoms as embedded inguinal hernia.

Treatment of scrotal hernia in cats

The content of scrotal hernia in cats is usually the small intestine, but omentum or prostate fat can also be seen. Cat scrotal hernia usually occurs on one side, and it is very rare for it to occur on both sides at the same time. When a cat's scrotum is significantly enlarged, it is necessary to go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible.

Once a cat's scrotal hernia is diagnosed, surgery should be performed as soon as possible. It is best to position the skin incision before surgery, lift the animal's two hind limbs and squeeze the contents of the hernia to observe whether it can be restored. If it can be restored, the incision should be made at the midline of the abdomen. The length of the incision is 2-3 cm at the outer ring of the groin near the first pair of nipples. If the hernia contents are irreversible, the incision should be extended posteriorly from the external inguinal ring, and the length of the incision should be one-half to two-thirds of the length of the hernia sac. This facilitates dissection of the adhesions after incision of the hernia sac.
