How to diagnose and treat ruptured diaphragmatic hernia in cats?
We cannot tell whether a cat’s diaphragm has ruptured with the naked eye, and X-rays are usually needed for diagnosis. If there is a ruptured diaphragm, it should be treated as soon as possible to prevent the disease from affecting the cat's daily life.
Diagnosis:
1. When abdominal viscera is missing or displaced within the chest cavity, the abdominal viscera also exhibits corresponding clinical symptoms. Pleural leakage may be present, particularly if the liver or spleen becomes entrapped in diaphragmatic rupture. The film is clearly defined, and the barium meal helps determine the location of the abdominal organs. In congenital diaphragmatic hernia, the organs may be contained within the pericardial sac, presenting as a separate chest mass connected to the diaphragm.
2. Chest ultrasound examination of sick animals: When the X-ray examination results are blurred, ultrasound examination can help diagnose diaphragm rupture. Later, lung lobe damage, pleural rupture and obvious leakage will be found. Abdominal organs such as the omentum, spleen, and gastrointestinal tract can be imaged in the pleural space after severe damage to the diaphragm. Liver micrographs can avoid erroneous diagnoses.
Treatment:
Surgical repair should be attempted when the diaphragm is defective. Treatment can be performed as soon as possible after the animal's condition is stable.
