Ear mites, also known as ear itch mites, are parasites of the external auditory canal. The moving oval-shaped worms can be seen under a microscope. The four stages of ear mites, including eggs, larvae, nymphs, and adults, are all completed in the external auditory canal of dogs. It can be said that the ear canal of dogs is their lifelong home. The worms rely on their mouthparts to destroy the skin and suck lymph fluid and scales on the epidermis of the external auditory canal. This constant stimulation will make the dog feel unbearable itching. Dogs with ear mites will accumulate thick black-brown mud debris in the external auditory canal. What are the common symptoms of dog ear mites and what are the prevention and treatment measures?

Causes of ear mites in dogs:

The male body length of the canine ear itch mite is 0.35 to 0.38 mm, and there are two slender hairs at the end of the third pair of legs; the female body length is 0.46 to 0.53 mm, and the fourth pair of legs is underdeveloped and cannot be extended. The edge of the body is three times shorter than the third pair of legs; the third and fourth pairs of legs have no suckers. It lives in the external auditory canal of dogs and survives by piercing the skin to suck lymph and exudate, resulting in irritation, inflammation and scab formation. Sometimes due to secondary bacterial infection, the lesions can penetrate deep into the middle ear, inner ear and meninges.

Symptoms of ear mites in dogs:

The sick dog shakes its head, scratches or rubs the affected ear. There is a dark brown wax and exudate in the ear canal, sometimes with a phosphorus-like crust. Examining the ear canal with an otoscope can reveal tiny white or flesh-colored ear itch mites moving on dark brown exudate. Examination of the exudate with a magnifying glass or under a low-power microscope can prove that it is dog ear itch mites. If the meninges are invaded, the sick dog will show symptoms of madness.

Treatment of dog ear mites:

Inject less irritating oil such as mineral oil or earwax dissolving agent (oleic acid triethyl p-phenylenyl phenol polypeptide condensate 10%, chlorohydrin 0.5%, propylene glycol 89.5%, mix well) into the ear canal, and then gently Massage to aid cleansing and kill many mites. Use a metal ring to remove large amounts of exudate that clings to the eardrum during cleaning. After cleaning, apply acaricide: Mix 1 part of Conex (7.5% chloroform, 0.12% rotenone, 0.38% other ether extracts of the genus Chroma, 92% inactive ingredients, mixed) with 3 parts of mineral oil, as Drop the drops into the outside of the ear or apply with a cotton swab, once every 3 days; 1 to 2 m1 of dimethyl phthalate (dimethyl phthalate 24%, cottonseed oil 76%), inject into the ear canal and rub it gently. It can also be applied to the ear shells and feet, once every 3 to 4 days until recovery; protective oil base solution (resorcinol 5%, zinc oxide 4%, calamine 2%, juniper oil 1%, Pure wood acetic acid 0.4%, zinc hydroxide 8%) was instilled into the ear canal once a day.

In severe cases, the dog's entire body should be treated with parasiticide powder or medicated baths every day to kill mites not in the external auditory canal. If inflammation is presentFor lesions, hydrocortisone neomycin ointment should be applied to the inflammation site or 5-15 drops of pesticide solution (containing 40 mg of thiabendazole, 3.2 mg of neomycin sulfate, and 1 mg of dexamethasone per ml) should be injected into the ear canal. until the inflammation subsides.
