When a dog's eyelids turn inward, the eyelashes can easily rub against the cornea, causing ulcers. Often accompanied by severe pain and discomfort. If your dog often sheds tears or pus under his eyes, ask a veterinarian for a checkup immediately. Once you develop the disease, surgery is required. Entropion is the inward turning of the eyelid edge. Commonly seen in Pekingese, Shar-Pei, and Setter dogs. What are the causes of entropion of dogs’ eyes and faces? And how to treat them?

Causes of dog’s eyes turning inside out:

1. Developmental defective entropion

It is related to breed and genetics, and the exact genetic rules are unclear. Breeds such as Shar-Pei, Chow Chow, Saint Bernard, Labrador Retriever, Great Dane, and Miniature Poodle are prone to this disease. Facial and eye configuration may be a causative genetic defect. It is generally believed to be a simple dominant inheritance, and the inheritance pattern is difficult to determine. Generally, both eyes are diseased, and the degree of entropion varies depending on the species. For example, Great Danes have large and deep eye sockets that lack sufficient support for the eyelids, which in turn can cause entropion.

2. Spasmodic entropion

Conjunctivitis, foreign bodies, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, trichiasis, diplochiasis, easy eyelash growth, and corneal ulcers may cause entropion due to secondary orbicularis muscle spasm. Trigeminal neuralgia can cause blepharospasm and entropion. Eyelid trauma or inflammation causes fibrosis and causes eyelid deformation and entropion. It often occurs on one eyelid and can occur in dogs of any age.

3. Acquired entropion

Entropion is caused by loss of orbital fat or muscle atrophy. Loss of muscle tone in older dogs can also cause this disease.

Treatment of dog’s entropion:

Treat according to the cause

1. Developmental defective entropion

Most cases can be corrected surgically. However, surgery is generally ideal at 4-6 months of age or when facial features have matured. Shar Pei dogs can have temporary eyelid suturing at 3 weeks of age to prevent severe corneal lesions. Illustration of permanent surgical correction.

2. Spasmodic entropion

Most of the causes have been eliminated and the varus has improved. In order to reduce the irritation to the eyeball, soft contact lenses can be placed or temporary eyelid sutures can be performed, and the sutures can be removed in 2-3 weeks. If there is no effect, entropion surgery is required.

3. Acquired entropion

Depending on the degree of entropion correction, surgical correction is performed. Generally, lateral canthus fixation is used to reduce the palpebral fissure to correct entropion. Skin flaps of equal size were incised on the upper and lower eyelids at the outer canthus of the eye. The upper eyelid skin flap is removed and the lower eyelid skin flap is retained and sutured to the eyelid skin defect.

4. Postoperative care

In the first few days after surgery, the eyelids were slightly ectropion due to swelling. Apply antibiotic eye ointment or eye drops to the affected eye 3-4 times a day. An Elizabethan ring must be worn around the neck to prevent damage to the affected eye. Sutures are removed 10-14 days after surgery.
