This disease is a poisoning disease caused by dogs eating food containing Clostridium botulinum. Clinically, it is characterized by motor central nervous system paralysis and bulbar palsy, with a high mortality rate. Clostridium botulinum is found in animal carcasses, meat, feed and canned foods. It is widely distributed and has strong resistance.

【Symptoms】

The severity of the disease is directly proportional to the amount ingested. The incubation period is hours or days. The earlier the symptoms appear, the more serious the poisoning is. The symptoms of the disease are progressive. Vomiting and foaming can be seen at the beginning of the disease, and it progresses to symmetrical paralysis of the limbs. It usually extends from the hind limbs to the forelimbs, causing quadriplegia. The affected dog's reflex function decreased, muscle tone decreased, and obvious motor nerve dysfunction occurred. Sick dogs generally have low body temperature and are conscious. Due to masseter muscle paralysis, mandibular droop, salivation, difficulty chewing and swallowing, drooping ears, poor eyelid reflexes, visual impairment, and mydriasis. In severe dogs, diaphragm muscle tone is reduced, dyspnea, cardiac dysfunction, and mortality are high.

【Prevention】

(1). Each dog can be treated with polyvalent antitoxin by intramuscular or intravenous injection of 3-5 ml. Early application is more effective than late application.

(2). Kanamycin sulfate injection 50,000 units/kg body weight, 2 times/day.

(3). Rehydration therapy, 100-1000 ml of 5% glucose saline and 10-50 ml of 5% sodium bicarbonate injection, mixed for intravenous infusion.

(4). Prevent dogs from eating spoiled meat and food. Food should be heated to 100 C before feeding and fed after more than 10 minutes.
