Symptoms of emphysema in dogs:

1. The early symptoms are not obvious, but dyspnea may occur when overexerted.

2. The physical signs of patients with mild emphysema are mostly normal. When the condition worsens, they will have weakened respiratory movements, barrel-shaped chest, prolonged expiration, decreased hepatic dullness, weakened or disappeared vibrato, and shortness of breath. The voice is weakened and there are wet rales in the lungs.

3. Sometimes wet and dry rales can be heard at the base of the lungs, and the second heart sound of the pulmonary artery is hyperactive. The only difference is that patients with severe emphysema may have shallow and rapid breathing at rest, and almost no breath sounds can be heard. Cyanosis may also occur, and signs such as jugular venous distension, ascites, hepatomegaly, and pitting edema may occur when combined with cor pulmonale and right heart failure.

Treatment measures for emphysema in dogs:

1. Strengthen care: First, let the dog rest and provide nutritious food. The kennel should be kept clean, dust-free, and well-ventilated.

2. Improve ventilation and ventilation function: Dogs can be given oral or aerosolized bronchodilators, such as theophylline and adrenergic drugs, and adrenocortical hormones should be used with caution. Avoid using sleeping pills, sedatives, etc.

3. Control heart failure: Diuretics can be used when edema occurs.

4. Oxygen therapy: low-concentration oxygen inhalation multiple times a day can relieve dogs’ breathing difficulties and control heart failure.

5. Surgical therapy: Resection of large localized emphysema bullae can inflate the compressed normal lung tissue and enhance the elastic return of the lungs.
