Otitis media in dogs refers to inflammatory lesions that occur in all or part of the middle ear canal (including the Eustachian tube, tympanic cavity, tympanic sinus and mastoid air cells).

【Basic information】

Family: Ear diseases

Symptoms: pain, loss of appetite, elevated body temperature, fever, frequent shaking of the head, movement disorder

【Cause】

There are many causes of otitis media in dogs, such as food allergies, allergic diseases, allergies caused by fleas and the most common water in the ears during bathing.

【Main Symptoms】

The general symptoms of otitis media are very similar to otitis externa, including dogs shaking their heads, ear pain and deafness, and otorrhea and tympanic membrane perforation. Otitis media may spread to the inner ear, causing otitis interna, showing nystagmus and ataxia. Sick dogs often keep the affected ear down, rotate toward the affected side and fall to the affected side, unable to stand up. In severe cases, the inflammation invades the facial nerve and parasympathetic nerve, causing facial paralysis, dry conjunctivitis and dry nasal mucosa. Inflammation causes meningitis after invading the meninges, or cerebellar abscess and death.

【Diagnostic criteria】

Diagnosis can be made based on neurological examination and symptoms of otitis media.

【Treatment method】

1. Clean the ear canal first, and then use erythromycin ointment (used by humans) twice a day.

2. Clean the ear canal first, add an appropriate amount of antibiotics (penicillin, gentamicin, neomycin sulfate, etc.) with normal saline, use cotton wool dipped in the liquid to clean the ear canal, and then use ear drops to instill the ear canal. 2 to 3 times a day. Ear drops of a mixture of neomycin, dexamethasone, and lidocaine can also be used, 2 to 6 drops a day, 3 to 4 times a day. Ear drops such as ofloxacin ear drops can clear the ear canal.

3. Required drugs: 3% hydrogen peroxide, Oridermyl; then dip a cotton swab into the hydrogen peroxide, go deep into the dog’s ear canal and scrub gently to clean away the dirt; then drop in Oridermyl.

4. Other methods:

(1) Compound neomycin ear drops, anti-inflammatory, 3-4 times a day.

(2) Erkang, anti-inflammatory and anti-itching, 3-4 times a day.

(3) Tympanic cavity flushing. If flushing is still ineffective, ear cavity curettage can be performed.

(4) External auditory canal or total ear canal removal.
