Can these cold medicines be given to pets?

Pet owners often say that their pets have a cold and diarrhea, so they give them some human cold medicine, in a child's dosage. Many pet doctors will also tell owners that they cannot give it to dogs and cats. So, can they take it?< /p>

In fact, some human medicines are safe for pets, while others are toxic and have side effects. The five common types of drugs listed below are fatally toxic to pets!

Six major categories of ingredients in human cold medicine:

1. Antipyretic and analgesic drugs (such as: acetaminophen, aspirin, diclofenac sodium, aminopyrine), representative drugs include: Compiled, Tylenol, Baijiahei, Crack, Gankang, Yindefei, Bai Fu Ning. These drugs cause serious damage to the liver and kidneys.

2. Vasoconstrictor drugs (such as: pseudoephedrine, phenylpropanolamine), representative drugs include: Xincontac, Tylenol, Baijiahei, Yindefei, Baifuning. This type of drug is prohibited for patients with cardiovascular disease, "three highs", hyperthyroidism, and prostate disease.

3. Anti-allergic drugs (such as: chlorpheniramine maleate, diphenhydramine hydrochloride), representative drugs include:

Xincontac, Tylenol, Baijiahei (night), Kuaike, Gankang, Yindefei, Baifuning (night). This type of drug has side effects of nerve depression and drowsiness, and is prohibited for drivers, machine operators, and people working at heights.

4. Antitussive and expectorant products (such as dextromethorphan hydrobromide, dioxypromethazine hydrochloride, licorice mixture)

Representative drugs: Tylenol, Baijiahei, Baifu Ning. These drugs are highly irritating to the gastrointestinal tract.

5. Representative drugs of central nervous system stimulants (such as caffeine): crack, Gankang. These drugs are contraindicated in infants and young children.

6. Representative antiviral drugs (amantadine, rimantadine): Isatis root, crack, Gankang. This type of drug is prohibited for pregnant and lactating women

The difference between pets and people catching colds

Pets are the same as people. Some colds caused by viruses are viral, while others are caused by common respiratory inflammation, such as conventional bronchitis and pneumonia symptoms. It is mainly caused by cold viruses in humans, which are not very harmful and not fatal. However, the symptoms of colds in pets include coughing, sneezing, and watery eyes. Especially in China, where there are many stray dogs and cats with no immunity or incomplete immunity, many are caused by some infectious diseases and are fatal.

Why can’t pets take people’s cold medicine?

The key is body specificity. Different tolerances and individual differences will lead to different drug effects and consequences. Some pets can have serious side effects or even poisoning if they take human medicines. Even humans sometimes take cold medicines and have serious side effects. There are currently some domestic pet-specific antiviral Chinese patent medicines on the market that can be used.

The consequences of pets eating human drugs

1) Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesics (NSAIDS)

For example, ibuprofen. This type of drug is safe for humans, but only a small tablet can cause severe gastrointestinal ulcers and even kidney failure in small animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, and birds. For anti-inflammatory analgesics, be sure to follow your veterinarian’s prescription and use pet-specific analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs. And you cannot feed people medicine at will.

2) Acetaminophen

For example, Tylenol and other cold medicines containing acetaminophen. These drugs are generally safe for children and adults, but not for pets. Even a small dose can cause red blood cell damage in cats. Large doses of acetaminophen can cause red blood cell death and liver failure in dogs.

3) Benzodiazepines and sleeping pills

Some owners think their pets are restless and give them sleeping pills to keep them quiet. Sleeping pills can help people feel less anxious and sleep better, but they can have the exact opposite effect on pets. Dogs may become more aroused after taking benzodiazepine sleeping pills, and cats may develop liver failure. These drugs may also cause pets to become depressed, wobbly, and have difficulty breathing.

4) Drugs to treat abnormal cholesterol

Pets usually need to take these drugs because, unlike people, high cholesterol will not aggravate cardiovascular system diseases. However, the good news is that if your medicine bottle is not put away properly, your pet will usually only experience mild vomiting and diarrhea after eating it. Nonetheless, you still need to keep these medications in place, as pets often ingest them and they can have serious side effects.

5) Anti-anxiety drugs

Pets can also suffer from anxiety disorders, so there are also anti-anxiety medications specifically designed for pets. However, excessive doses of anti-anxiety drugs used by humans, such as the common prozac, can cause neurological symptoms in pets, such as convulsions, tremors, tachycardia, increased blood pressure, increased body temperature, and even death. Therefore, anti-anxiety medications must be prescribed by your veterinarian.

In addition to these 5 types of drugs, there are other drugs that are also harmful to pets. In serious cases, they may cause death.

Many people use antibiotics, which can be used on pets (many drugs for humans are used in preclinical experiments on dogs and mice). However, the dosage for pets is by no means as simple as halving it for children, nor is it based on the weight of the pet. ContrastIt's as simple as reducing the dose in proportion to the person's weight. Even if they are both pets, many drugs, dogs and cats, have different drug dosages per kilogram of body weight.

Any medicine has side effects. Therefore, for the safety and health of your pet, you must follow your pet’s doctor’s prescription and do not use human medicine at will.
