Intestinal obstruction is a physical or functional obstruction of the intestinal lumen that prevents intestinal contents from flowing smoothly. It is clinically characterized by severe abdominal pain and obvious systemic symptoms. According to the degree of intestinal obstruction, it can be divided into complete obstruction and incomplete obstruction.

Symptoms:

(1) Vomiting, abdominal swelling, abdominal pain, and inability to defecate.

(2) Frequent vomiting can cause obvious dehydration symptoms in dogs.

(3) Due to intestinal obstruction, a large amount of gas accumulates in the intestines, and the dog's abdominal distension can be clearly seen.

(4) In severe cases, there will be progressive abdominal pain, and the dog's body temperature will also increase and symptoms such as weakness will occur, and sometimes shock will occur.

Cause:

(1) Physical factors. Foreign bodies in the intestines (such as dogs and cats often swallowing toys, stones, traction belts, cloth strips and ropes, etc.), fecal secretions, intestinal parasites, tumors inside and outside the intestines, enteritis, intussusception, and intestinal strangulation Stenosis, intestinal volvulus, scar formation after intestinal surgery, etc., may cause intestinal lumen occlusion and cause mechanical visceral obstruction.

(2) Functional factors. The nerves that control the intestinal wall are disordered or inflamed or necrotic, resulting in weakened or disappeared intestinal peristalsis; or mesenteric thrombosis, causing intestinal blood circulation disorders, which in turn paralyzes the intestinal wall muscles and retains intestinal contents.

Preventive measures:

(1) Regular deworming to reduce intestinal infarction caused by parasites.

(2) Feeding should be done regularly and quantitatively, and avoid excessive hunger.

(3) After feeding, avoid strenuous exercise.

(4) Pay more attention to dogs that like to play and bite toys or other objects, especially when playing outside.

(5) It is best not to feed bones to your dog. If you must feed them, it is recommended to give them large bones.
