What are the signs of dystocia in Scottish Fold cats?
Signs of dystocia in cats with folded ears:
1. The pregnancy period of cats is 52-69 days, and 60 days is the common date. The duration of the delivery period is one day or longer, and the interval between the births of two fetuses is 30-60 minutes. If the normal delivery time is exceeded and the fetus cannot be delivered smoothly, it is called dystocia.
2. The female cat does not eat or eats little, urinates frequently, often with small urine output, is restless, or constantly looks back at her abdomen, and dirty red and fishy liquid flows out from the vulva, contaminating the tail and hind limbs.
3. Female cats often lick their vulva, kick their abdomen with their hind feet, and even roll on the ground.
4. The female cat’s abdomen contracted significantly, but no kittens were produced.
How to rescue a folded-eared cat with dystocia:
1. Massage the abdomen. Use the palm of your hand to press the abdominal wall according to the contraction frequency of the female cat's abdomen, from light to heavy, so that the abdomen can strengthen the contraction in order to deliver the fetus.
2. Medicinal midwifery. If massage for 30 minutes still fails to assist delivery, medications can be used to assist delivery, usually injections of pituitary hormone and diethylstilbestrol.
3. Manual traction. If the fetus has been exposed for 5 minutes but cannot be delivered, manual traction is required at this time. Lay the female cat on its side, place your left hand against the cat's shoulder, hold the exposed part of the fetus with your right hand and gently push it into the pelvic cavity, then gently turn the fetus and pull it out.
4. Cesarean section. If non-surgical methods cannot produce a fetus under special circumstances, cesarean section may be considered. However, surgery is only suitable for healthy female cats without critical illness.
