Dogs can't eat pork? This statement is wrong!

Since I have been raising dogs, I have never seen pork dog food, and there are many rumors that dogs cannot eat pork. In addition, there is never canned pork or pork food in dog food, canned food, etc., which seems to confirm this statement from the side. But can dogs really not eat pork? Are the "scientific evidence" that dogs have noses and eyes really reliable? Let us distinguish the true from the false one by one.

· Pork fat globules are too large, causing capillary blockage

In fact, lipase secreted by the small intestine and pancreas will break down fat globules into small molecules that can be absorbed. In other words, before reaching the capillaries, fat globules have already been broken down into fatty acids that are very easy to absorb. Therefore, the size of fat globules has nothing to do with blocked blood vessels.

Note: This argument first came from the 1983 book "The New Natural Cat". There is a sentence in the book: "Ham and pork contain fat globules so large that they clog the cat's blood vessels." Meaning, ham and pork contain fat globules so large that they clog the cat's blood vessels. Too much fat will block the cat's blood vessels, and this view has not been corrected in subsequent version updates.

· Pigs cannot perspire and accumulate many toxins in their bodies

This is really a misunderstanding of cute pigs. Mammals like this have their own special adjustment mechanism, just like dogs sweat and dissipate heat through their feet. If there is no serious problem with the body, the toxins have already followed the excrement to the outside of the body. Finally, if detoxification relies on sweating, animals that don’t sweat would have poisoned themselves to death.

·Pork is rich in saturated fatty acids, which can easily cause cardiovascular disease

This statement actually only applies to humans. As a dog whose main food is meat, there is no direct evidence to prove the relationship between the two, and its saturated fat is even less than that of beef and mutton.

· The fat content of pork and eggs is too high for dogs

Compared with beef, mutton and rabbit meat, the protein content of pork is indeed relatively high, but it is not all fatty meat. For example, tenderloin and lean meat have relatively low fat content (just like the fat content of bodybuilders). (lower meaning), if a reasonable combination is carried out, it can also be made into a suitable fat content. Besides, tenderloin is slightly lower in fat than skinless chicken breast.

·Pork is more difficult to digest than other meats

This feeling is not a rumor started by people in China. Pork is probably more popular in our country. The acceptance level of pork is not high in foreign countries. And in human and animal digestibility experiments, pork fat has not been found to be more difficult to digest than other animal or vegetable fats. For dogs, there is no difference between pork and chicken, duck, beef and mutton. As for the so-called special enzyme, that is even more nonsense. The staple food of dogs is meat!!

·Pork contains parasites and bacteria

I can only say that if you want to eat it raw, then no matter what kind of meat there is the possibility of parasites, you can’t just talk about pork. This is a prejudice against it. Even the famous pork tapeworm is not a big problem. One is that it is intolerant to freezing (below -15℃, inactivated in about three days), and the other is that the probability of dogs getting it is relatively small. In addition, if it is cooked food, there is no need to mention it. Under high temperature, it is impossible for any parasites, bacteria and other microorganisms to survive.

Risk issues in pork that should be paid attention to

·Trichinellosis

This is the only parasitic disease in pork that needs to be taken seriously, and dogs become infected by eating raw pork containing cysts of Trichinella spiralis larvae. Trichinella infection can be divided into two stages: the intestinal stage and the muscular stage.

In the intestinal stage (Trichinella adult worms parasitize the small intestine), vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain will occur, which lasts for about a week. In severe cases, bloody diarrhea may occur; in the muscle stage (the larvae parasitize the skeletal muscles), the situation is more serious. After male and female Trichinella worms mate, the larvae circulate through lymph and blood and enter the skeletal muscles of the body. They develop into cysts in the skeletal muscles for 1-3 months. The cysts begin to calcify after 6 months (the cysts are very resistant). , can survive in carrion for more than 100 days). It can cause acute myositis. In addition to muscle pain and fever, there may also be symptoms of nerve damage (such as difficulty swallowing and chewing), and even death.

Once this problem is discovered, 25-40 mg/kg mebendazole can be taken orally twice a day for 7 consecutive days to reduce the number of live larvae in the muscle (if the live larvae have been calcified, there is basically no treatment). To relieve muscle itching and pain, adrenocorticotropic hormone or adrenocortical hormone (acetic acid can be used), etc. can be used.

(Only found in humans, let’s learn a little bit about it) Trichinella spiralis is a zoonotic parasitic disease. It matures two days after ingestion, and five days later the female begins to produce new larvae (Trichinella spiralis is viviparous. These larvae then enter the lymph and plasma , and then transported to the muscle, and cysts are formed in the muscle 2-3 weeks later.

Although freezing can render Trichinella infective,However, it is not completely reliable. Some scholars have done research and found that Trichinella spiralis can still survive if it is frozen at 120°C for 6 months. Therefore, to be on the safe side, it is recommended that you cook pork before feeding it to dogs.

· Pseudorabies

It is a virus that occurs in pigs. It is named because the symptoms of rabbit infection are similar to those of rabies. It has nothing to do with rabies. Dogs infected with pseudorabies virus may initially feel depressed, stare at and lick a certain part of the skin, and then develop local itching (mainly on the face, ears and shoulders). The dog will scratch or bite to relieve it, but the itching will remain. In some cases, large wounds occurred, and the surrounding tissue swelled, causing deep damage. In addition, sick dogs react strongly to the outside world and are aggressive. They usually die within 24-36 hours, and are 100% fatal. There is no treatment.

Is there really no dog food/canned food that uses pork as raw material?

In fact, you can log on to dogfoodadvisor.com (a dog food evaluation website) and you will find that there are 50 types of dog food that also contain pork ingredients. Although they are small, they do exist, and they are even well-known brands, such as Aikena, Fumo, etc. As for the reasons why everyone thinks it is relatively rare, there are only two reasons.

First, most countries are not very accepting of pork, and partly due to religious reasons, pork has become a taboo, such as Islam.

Second, the raw materials of dog food are mostly made of leftovers that are not suitable for humans, and they originate from Europe and the United States. They do not consume much pork, so there are relatively few leftovers. In other words, if dog food originates from China, pork may become the main force of dog food.

Finally, to sum up, pork is not inedible. Not only can it be eaten, but its vitamin B12 is better than other meats. It’s just that everyone must cook the pork before giving it to the dog. If it is infected with trichinella spiralis or pseudorabies, it is really not worth the loss.
