The reason why cats like to get into boxes

It’s in cats’ nature to squeeze into tight spaces to feel safe. Rather than being exposed to noisy, wide open spaces, they prefer to crowd into relatively smaller, more clearly defined areas. When cats are young, they often snuggle with their mother cat and other kittens to gain warmth and comfort. This is seen as a "swaddling behavior". We believe that close contact with the inside of the box stimulates the release of endorphins. Endorphins are natural morphine analogues that stimulate the nerves to bring a sense of pleasure and reduce stress.

Also don’t forget that cats can build nests too. Their nests are small and scattered, mainly to ensure that the mother cat can give birth to kittens smoothly and to provide shelter for the kittens. It's important to note that no behavior is gender-specific, and some behaviors may be neutral. For cats, a preference for small spaces is one of their behavioral patterns that can bring them benefits. Of course, this is not a good thing for cat owners, especially when they need to walk their cats or take their cats to the vet.

However, other situations may arise, such as the box being too shallow and not providing the cat with the desired comfort.

Or as mentioned at the beginning, the so-called "box" has no four walls, and only uses tape to mark a square on the ground to indicate the existence of the box. Although this fake box does not bring the same sense of security as the real thing, it shows the possibility of the real existence of the box, which makes the cats imagine that it would be great if there was a real square box that they could nestle in.
