Cats don’t seem to like drinking water very much. This is for historical reasons. The ancestors of cats are small cats that live in grasslands and desert areas. Due to their geographical location, there are few water sources, so cats gradually evolved into animals that can survive by drinking very little water. In the past, most cats, whether domestic or stray, were used to hunting food on their own, and the water content of prey was very high, so cats did not like to drink extra water.

Although there are historical reasons why cats don’t like to drink water, it does not mean that this has no impact on health. Especially cats in the cat food era, it is impossible not to let them drink more water.

I don’t like drinking water, what’s the problem?

If a cat drinks less water, it will still develop various health problems, such as:

Bladder stones: Although drinking less water is not the main cause of stones, it can make the concentration of urine in the bladder too high, making it easier to produce sediments and crystals, especially for some cats with stone constitutions. If you like to drink water, you'll be in trouble.

Kidney disease: Drinking more water will help eliminate toxins in the kidneys and maintain the body's water balance. If you don't like to drink water, the chance of kidney disease will increase, especially for elderly cats.

Constipation: If the water intake is not enough, food will more easily dry out in the intestines, and some cats are also prone to constipation.

Too low water content in food is a big problem. Although scientific research shows that the invention of cat food has greatly increased the average life span of cats, it is an indisputable fact that the proportion of urinary system diseases in cats has increased significantly due to the use of dry cat food as the staple food.

How can we make them drink more water?

Automatic water dispenser: It doesn’t mean that being tall is good, but the flowing water simulated by the automatic water dispenser will make cats like to drink more, and it will also filter some dirt in the water.

Place more water bowls: At home, place more water bowls, but keep them away from food.

Colorful water bowls: Cats like fresh things. Changing colorful water bowls frequently will help stimulate their interest in drinking water, and the fresher the color of the water bowl, the better.

Pay attention to water quality:Some cats like to drink mineral water, while others hate the taste of minerals in the water. We should judge the interests of the cats at home and provide them with the type of water they like based on the safety of drinking water.

Increase the proportion of wet food: No matter how you encourage the cat to drink water, if the wet food in the daily food is too little, the cat will still reduce its water intake by 50%, so it is necessary to feed the cat more complete nutrition. Wet food can also prevent obesity.

It is not easy to make cats fall in love with drinking water! Owners should observe the cats’ living habits and slowly change the cats’ little problem of not liking to drink water.
