Third eyelid hyperplasia in dogs is usually related to the development of their own body structures, such as irritation of the eyes by hair, excessive glandular secretion, congenital nictitating membrane cartilage defects and tissue defects, etc. It is a relatively common disease in dog breeds. It is difficult to heal on your own. Secondly, prolapse of the third eyelid will cause vision impairment in dogs and secrete a large amount of tear stains. It is also hereditary and can easily cause complications such as bleeding and inflammation of the canthus of the eye. Therefore, for the sake of the dog’s health, when you find that your dog has third eyelid prolapse, you must take it to the pet hospital for diagnosis and treatment in time.

1. Symptoms of third eyelid protrusion in dogs

In the early stage of third eyelid protrusion in dogs, symptoms such as mild conjunctival flushing and tearing will occur. Due to discomfort, some dogs will scratch the affected eye with their forelimbs. 1-2 days later, you will find a mung bean-sized to soybean-sized pink substance protruding from the inner corner of the dog's eye. As the disease progresses, it will become as big as a peanut grain, and its surface will be smooth, moist, and tough.

If the prolapsed gland is small, it can retract into the eyelid on its own. If the prolapsed gland enlarges and cannot retract, it will cover part of the cornea and affect vision, and the color will change from the initial pink to purple.

2. What to do if the third eyelid hyperplasia occurs in dogs

When a dog has third eyelid hyperplasia, you can first give the dog eye drops for a period of time. For about a week, the third eyelid of some dogs will retract. However, this situation is relatively easy to relapse. If it exceeds a week, If it is not taken in, then the only option is surgery. Therefore, the best way to treat third eyelid hyperplasia in dogs is surgical removal. However, after surgery, dogs still have a certain chance of developing dry eye syndrome.
