What are the symptoms of toxoplasmosis in dogs? Take a look! Most dogs are latently infected, and infections are more common in puppies and young dogs, with obvious symptoms. The symptoms of the disease are similar to canine distemper (details) and canine infectious hepatitis. The main symptoms include elevated body temperature, mental fatigue, loss of appetite or exhaustion, cough, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, eye and nose secretions, and pale mucous membranes. Or jaundice, pregnant female dogs often suffer from miscarriage, premature birth or stillbirth.

Symptoms of toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis infection routes: Mainly include damage parts of the digestive tract, skin and mucous membranes, various insects (cockroaches, flies , lice, fleas, ticks, etc.) and earthworms, as well as poorly sterilized injection equipment, etc., can be transmitted to the fetus through the placenta during the acute infection period. After Toxoplasma invades, it mainly reaches the nucleated cells of various tissues and organs through lymph and blood circulation, and proliferates asexually in the cytoplasm through budding. When the proliferation is active, various forms of trophozoite parasites will appear in various tissues and blood, urine, tears, saliva, semen, feces, etc. of the infected animals. At this time, the animals will show an acute attack of the disease. In chronic cases or some latent infections in people who lack symptoms, it is usually due to the influence of various factors in the body that the asexual proliferation process of Toxoplasma gondii in the body is blocked, and these parasites will be in certain organs in the host's body. Cysts are formed in the organ tissue, so the cyst-type parasite is a resting state of Toxoplasma gondii.

Prevention and treatment of toxoplasmosis:Sulfa drugs are more effective in treating this disease. Commonly used drugs are:

① Sulfadiazine, 70-100 mg per kilogram of body weight, intramuscular injection or oral administration twice a day. The effect is better when used together with trimethoprim (14 mg per kilogram of body weight) or pyrimethamine (0.44 mg per kilogram of body weight).

② Compound sulfamethoxazole tablets, 70 mg per kilogram of body weight, taken orally 2 times a day.

③ Synergistic sulfonamide-5-methoprim, 60 to 70 mg per kilogram of body weight, intramuscular injection once a day. Similar drugs include sulfamethylpyrimidine, sulfadimethylpyrimidine, sulfamethoxazine, etc., which generally require continuous use for 3 to 4 days. At the same time, it should be noted that since the drug only acts on free pathogens such as trophozoites, it should be treated as early as possible in the early stages of the disease. In addition, in order to prevent the precipitation of crystals in urine, the same amount of sodium bicarbonate can be used and the dog should drink more water.

For cases with severe symptoms, symptomatic treatment such as rehydration, hemostasis, antidiarrhea and cooling should also be taken.

The above introduces the symptoms of toxoplasmosis. Once a dog is found to be infected, the sick dog should be isolated from other dogs as soon as possible and the kennel should be disinfected.
